Olympiacos, Iraklis, and Greek football in general, are mourning the death of Costas Karapatis, who died at the age of 93.
The Olympiacos Veterans Association announced the tragic news of Costas Karapatis’ death.
He established himself as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation with the “gloves” of Iraklis Thessaloniki and Olympiakos, before going on to coach and leave his stamp on Greek football.
He began his career at Atromitos Kamaras in Thessaloniki and then went on to play for four years at the “old,” with whom he won the Thessaloniki title in 1951.
He subsequently transferred to Olympiakos, where he spent six years winning titles before returning to Hércules in 1957.
Costas Karapatis held an uncommon milestone in his illustrious football career: he was the only player to ever wear the national team shirt, which he wore only once.
The explanation for his shortest tenure on the Greece bench as usual. On October 12, 1968, in Basel, an incident occurred following the ‘blue and whites’ game against Switzerland.
In the World Cup qualifications, the representative squad had lost 1-0. That was not, however, the grounds for his dismissal from the bench.
