Lauro Cavazos was an American educator and politician. He served as the United States Secretary of Education and was the first Hispanic to serve in the United States Cabinet.
Cavazos spent a lot of his childhood on the King Ranch where his dad, Lauro Cavazos, Sr., filled in as the main Hispanic foreman of the farm.
The schools in Kingsville were isolated when Cavazos was a kid, however, the educational committee at the time permitted him to select at the Caucasian school.
He was the primary Hispanic youngster to select at Flato Elementary, however, that was only the start that could only be described as epic of firsts.
Cavazos proceeded to acquire a bachelor’s and a graduate degree in zoology from Texas Tech and later a doctorate in physiology from Iowa State.
In 2006, his alma mater Iowa State University awarded him the Distinguished Achievement Award, their highest honors.
