Matthew Robert Wisler, better known by his nickname Wis, is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays. The San Diego Padres selected him in the seventh round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft out of high school. In 2015, he made his MLB debut.
He was a member of the Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Padres, Seattle Mariners, Minnesota Twins, and San Francisco Giants in the past.
Wisler is one of three children born to Bob and Sue Wisler in Bryan, Ohio.
In his hometown, he attended Bryan High School. Wisler threw to a 6–1 record in his senior season, with a 0.17 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 42 innings while allowing 13 hits and seven walks.
He signed a national letter of intent to play collegiate baseball for the Ohio State Buckeyes but instead elected to join the Padres.
Wisler’s changeup was well-known in the minor leagues when he was there. While with the Braves, he began to mix his fastball with a slider instead, throwing his changeup on only 8.5 percent of pitches during his first season with the team.
Wisler married his wife, Madie, in Atlanta in 2019.
