The National Park Service confirmed the death of 35-year-old Matthias Rimml on Friday following an aerial search for the solo climber.
When he didn’t show up for work on May 3, his family called the police. During the ascent, he was unable to be reached by a companion.
They dialed 911 because they were so concerned about the situation. Many people are still attempting to reach the summit of North America’s tallest peak.
He last spoke to a buddy on April 30 at 2 p.m., and the aerial search began on Wednesday, four days after that.
“Tired” and “not in trouble” were the words he used when he called a buddy. He was also right below Denali Pass at the time.
Rimml made the decision to go it alone on this climb. Climbers are advised to travel light and swiftly when tackling this climb. On April 27, he began his ascent from the 7,200-foot-high Kahiltna Basecamp.
In order to complete the ascent, he estimated that it would take him five days. Friends feared the worst when he didn’t respond to their messages.
“Rimml was carrying 10 days of food and fuel,” the National Park Service (NPS) said when his death was found. After landing at 14,000 feet, he hadn’t returned to his tent.
Climbers making the ascent of this peak are required to register, and he was the first one to do so this year.
