Meet Liz Truss Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs UK
Since 2010, Elizabeth Mary Truss has served as the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk. Since 2021, she has held the positions of Foreign Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities.
LIZ TRUSS EDUCATION
Truss was President of the Oxford University Liberal Democrats while at Merton College in Oxford. In 1996, she graduated from the University of Oxford and joined the Conservative Party.
LIZ TRUSS CAREER
Before becoming a member of parliament in 2010, she worked in sales, as an economist, and as the deputy director of the Reform think tank.
Truss advocated for reform in a variety of policy areas as a backbencher, including childcare, math education, and the economy.
She formed the Conservative MPs’ Free Enterprise Group and has written or co-written a number of papers and books, including After the Coalition (2011) and Britannia Unchained (2012).
Truss campaigned for the retention of the RAF Tornado base at RAF Marham in her constituency after being elected to the House of Commons on 6 May 2010.
Over the course of seven months, she asked 13 questions in the Commons about RAF Marham, secured a special debate on the subject, wrote dozens of letters to ministers, and collected signatures on a petition that was delivered to Downing Street. She also succeeded in getting the A11 west of Thetford dualling.
LIZ TRUSS PRIVATE LIFE
Truss married accountant Hugh O’Leary in 2000. They have two daughters together.
