What killed Miguel Van Damme?
Migue Van Damme died after battling leukemia for a very long time.
Goalkeeper Miguel van Damme of Cercle Brugge in Belgium’s top division announced his death on Tuesday after being diagnosed with leukemia more than five years ago.
Van Damme is survived by his young daughter and wife. During a regular medical check-up prior to the 2016/17 season, he was diagnosed with the condition for the first time.
Over the course of five and a half years, the goalie battled illness on and off.
In a heartbreaking update, Van Damme told followers in September 2020 that the illness had returned for the third time, and this time it had been pronounced incurable, after battling and beating it twice before. Kyana Dobbelaere, his wife, announced his death on Instagram.
Van Damme received the devastating news that his disease was incurable just two days after learning he was going to be a father, according to Belgian source Sporza. In May 2021, Miguel and Kyana had their first child, Camille.
“Our dearest sweetheart, daddy went yesterday night for his last match, a match that can no longer be won,” Kyana wrote.
You left us softly, but you came back fiercely. You were a lion in battle. We are eternally grateful for who you were and what you accomplished. For many, an example.
“You’ve shown me that there’s no such thing as giving up; even if there was only a flicker of hope, you’ve proven time and time again that you can overcome any obstacle.”
Rest now, sweetie; you’ve earned it, and you’re pain-free. We’d be delighted to have you visit us. Your two daughters send a big hug to you. “Have a nice day.”
