From 1992 through 2005, Muhammad Baydoun was a moderate Lebanese politician who sat in the Lebanese parliament.
He was also the minister of electricity and energy from 2005 to 2007. He took part in numerous of the 14 March coalition’s rallies.
On February 5, 1952, Baydoun was born into a Shiite household in Bachoura, Beirut. His ancestors were from the southern Lebanon town of Bint Jbeil.
Baydoun earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lebanese University and a doctorate in mathematics from Lyon’s Claude Bernard University.
From 1976 through 1988, Baydoun was a mathematics professor at Lebanese University. He joined the Amal Movement as a senior official in 1980.
In 1982, he was elected to Amal’s political bureau, and on October 14, 1998, he was chosen its president.
Baydoun is also a previous president of Amal’s southern council (1985-1991).
He was appointed deputy from Amal in 1991 and was elected to the Shi’ite seat in Tyre, South Lebanon, in general elections in 1992 and 1996.
He also received more votes than Hezbollah candidates in the general election in 2000.
Baydoun has also served in several government cabinets as a minister. In Omar Karami’s government, he first served as Minister of Housing and Cooperatives.
From December 24, 1990, to May 10, 1992, he was in this position.
He was then appointed to Rachid Al Solh’s government as minister of electricity and water resources, serving from May 16 until October 30, 1992.
From 1998 to 2000, he was also a member of Prime Minister Salim Hoss’ government.
In October 2000, Baydoun was named to Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s cabinet as minister of electricity and water resources.
In March 2003, Baydoun was dismissed from the cabinet by Nabih Berri, the Amal movement’s leader.
