Is Nathan Eovaldi Good?
In 2020, Eovaldi was solid, although he only started nine games, resulting in an fWAR of 0.9. He made 32 starts and threw 182 1/3 innings in 2021, which are both career highs, trailing only his 2014 numbers.
The Red Sox’s entire staff benefited from such longevity, but given the workload Eovaldi carried as the staff ace, having him to pitch the entire season was a big plus.
Eovaldi was likewise consistent, with an ERA of less than 4.00 in all but one month of the season.
Eovaldi’s deal has gone from an overpay to a steal over the last two seasons. The right-hander is 15-11 with a 3.75 ERA, 3.01 FIP, and 9.6 K/9 rates in 41 start since the start of 2020.
After a strong first half, Eovaldi was chosen an All-Star for the first time this season, and he now has the best fWAR (5.6) of any pitcher in the American League with four days left in the season.
With Chris Sale out for the first 4 to 12 months of the season, Eovaldi’s rise has been critical to Boston’s ability to stay in contention throughout the year.
