Paul Edward Farmer was an American medical anthropologist and physician who died in his sleep in Kigali, Rwanda, on February 21, 2022, at the age of 62.
Farmer held an MD and Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he was the Kolokotrones University Professor and the chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
He co-founded Partners In Health (PIH), an international non-profit organization that since 1987 has provided direct health care services and undertaken research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty.

Dr. Paul Farmer was married to Dr. Didi Bertrand Farmer. The couple married in 1996. Didi is a medical anthropologist and community health specialist who has worked in Rwanda since 2005.
Didi is the Co-Founder and President of the Women and Girls Initiative in both Rwanda and Haiti. Her recent work focuses on empowering girls and young women in Haiti and Rwanda.
She was the Director of the Community Health Program for Partners In Health Rwanda and Inshuti Mu Buzima from 2006 to 2012, and from 2012 to introduce.
She is the Senior Advisor on Community Health and Head of the Biosocial Research and Social Development Programs for Partners In Health.
