Priscilla Tolkien Biography
Priscilla Mary Anne Reuel Tolkien was born on June 18, 1929, in Headington, Oxfordshire, England. She is the only daughter of the writer J.R.R Tolkien. Priscilla has siblings named Christopher Tolkien, Michael Tolkien, and John Tolkien. She worked as a social worker before retirement.
She is known for her work on J.R.R.T.: A Film Portrait of J.R.R. Tolkien (1996), Secrets of Middle-Earth: Inside Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” (2003) and Tolkien Remembered (1984).
Since 1986, Priscilla Tolkien has served as Honorary Vice-President of The Tolkien Society, and she has hosted members of the Society at Oxonmoot for many years.
At a young age, Priscilla typed some of the first chapters of The Lord of the Rings for her father when she was fourteen years old.
In 1951, she graduated from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, with a B.A. in English. She was a strong supporter of her father’s career and participated in the majority of the activities.
She, and her brother John, the oldest of the four children, released The Tolkien Family Album in 1992. Bingo Bolger-Baggins, Frodo’s name in early drafts of The Lord of the Rings, was based on the names of a family of toy bears she owned as a child.
On September 18, 1967, she married Christopher Tolkien. They have two children together. Their son Adam Reuel Tolkien and daughter Rachel Clare Reuel Tolkien were born in 1969 and 1971, respectively.
