How did Randy Holland Die?
When state officials announced his demise on Wednesday, no cause of death was immediately revealed. He died Tuesday 15 March 2022 at age 75.
Holland, who worked as a senior counselor in the Wilmington office of the national firm Wilson Sonsini, was widely regarded as one of the foremost experts on Delaware’s Constitution and was frequently called upon to weigh in on legislative and legal battles over some of the First State’s founding principles.
He was among the attorneys that successfully defended the state and Governor John Carney before the United States Supreme Court in a case that would have significantly changed the makeup of Delaware’s judgeships just two years ago.
When he was nominated by then-Gov, Michael Castle, and approved by the Delaware Senate in 1986, he became the state’s youngest Supreme Court justice.
Governors Tom Carper and Jack Markell both reappointed him to further 12-year terms in 2011. He became Delaware’s longest-serving justice in 2009, and he retired in 2017.
Holland wrote over 700 published opinions and thousands of case dispositive orders throughout his 30-year career on the court.
He also wrote two books about the Delaware Constitution, “Delaware Constitution of 1897, The First One Hundred Years” and “The Delaware Constitution: A Reference Guide,” which were extensively read and quoted.
He taught business ethics, corporate governance, appellate practice, and state constitutional law for many years.
Holland has traveled throughout the world to promote corporate governance and ethics, including working with Taiwan’s legal system.
