René Rafael Pinto, a Venezuelan professional baseball catcher with the Tampa Bay Rays, was born on November 2, 1996, in Maracay, Venezuela.
On October 1, 2013, Pinto signed with the Tampa Bay Rays as an international free agent.
Pinto spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Venezuelan Summer League Rays, hitting.264/.318/.347/.666 with one home run and 11 RBI in 2014 and.323/.379/.552/.931 with six home runs and 38 RBI in 2015.
In 2016, he divided his season between the GCL Rays and the Princeton Rays, hitting.262/.304/.483/.788 with eight home runs and 28 RBI.
Pinto hit.290/.339/.396/.734 with three home runs and 39 RBI in the GCL and Bowling Green Hot Rods in 2017.
Pinto hit.235/.303/.354/.657 with the Montgomery Biscuits in 2019, with five home runs and 30 RBI. He did not play in 2020 since the Minor League Baseball season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pinto divided the 2021 season between the Montgomery Biscuits and the Durham Bulls, hitting.274/.325/.500/.825 with 20 home runs and 60 RBI in total.
Pinto would be added to the Rays’ 40-man roster at the end of the 2021 season, at the expense of the system’s top catching prospect Blake Hunt, putting the 25-year-old catcher just one call away from making it to the majors.
Despite the fact that Mike Zunino and Francisco Mejia are ahead of him on the depth chart, Pinto’s ability to dazzle in the Majors makes it nearly probable that he will reach the Majors sooner rather than later.
