Ryan played baseball at Wakeland High School in Frisco, Texas. During the 2011 MLB draft, he was not drafted out of high school so he enrolled at Sam Houston State University where he played college baseball.
In 2014 when the baseball season was over, the Kansas City Royals drafted and signed him in the eighth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. Ryan began the 2015 season with the Lexington Legends and was promoted to the Wilmington Blue Rocks where he stayed until the season was over.
