The Houston Astros selected him in the 23rd round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. He was a member of the Astros’ farm system from 2017 to 2018, when he was sidelined by an injury, and he made it as far as the AAA Fresno Grizzlies.
The Tampa Bay Rays selected Thompson in the Rule 5 Draft’s minor league phase. In 2020, he will be on the Rays Opening Day roster.
His MLB debut occurred on July 24, 2020. He went 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA in 2020. Thompson was placed on the 60-day disabled list on August 3 of this year because of a right shoulder injury he sustained in late June.
Thompson had surgery on his thoracic outlet syndrome on September 24, 2021, according to reports.
