Ryan Scott Thompson was born on June 26, 1992, in Turner, Oregon, and is a professional baseball pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays of Major League Baseball. Thompson is a pitcher who throws in the style of a submarine.
The Turner, Oregon native attended Cascade High School and went on to play baseball at both Chemeketa Community College and Campbell University.
The Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League were his summer baseball team in 2013, and he played for them briefly.
He was selected by the Houston Astros in the 23rd round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. He was a member of the Astros’ farm system from 2013 to 2017, and he advanced as far as the AAA Fresno Grizzlies before being sidelined by injury in 2018.
Thompson was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round of the 2018 Rule 5 Draft, which took place in the minor leagues.
In 2020, he was named to the Rays’ Opening Day roster. On July 24, 2020, he made his Major League Baseball debut. He went 1-2 with one save and a 4.44 earned run average in 2020.
On June 30, 2021, Thompson was placed on the 60-day injured list by the NHL due to inflammation in his right shoulder. On August 3, 2021, Thompson was placed on the 60-day injured list again.
