Ryan Yarbrough attended Santa Fe College before transferring to Old Dominion University. Yarbrough was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft by the Seattle Mariners, and he made his Major League Baseball debut in 2018.

The Mariners traded Yarbrough, Mallex Smith, and Carlos Vargas to the Tampa Bay Rays on January 11, 2017, for Drew Smyly. In 26 starts with the Durham Bulls, he was 13–6 with a 3.43 ERA. After the season, he was added to the Rays’ 40-man roster.
