Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is a classical Indian musician as well as a santoor player who died recently on May 10, 2022. Shama who was born on January 13, 1938, was credited with adapting the Santoor for Indian classical music. He is known to have composed music for various Indian movies, collaborating with the likes of flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia under the name Shiv-Hari and so on. Before her death, she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1986. She also earned the Padma Bhushan award.
Sharma was born in Jammu in present-day Jammu and Kashmir in the India Union territory. His father is known as Uma Dutt Sharma who was a renowned vocalist and Tabla performer. His dad was a contributing factor to his great heights. For the santoor, in particular, Sharma began learning it at the age of thirteen and made his first public appearance on it in Mumbai in 1955.
He began his professional career performing the Santoor with his dad. He was recognized for introducing the Indian classical instrument (santoor). His first solo record was in the year 1960.
