Collinsville High School in Collinsville, Illinois, was where Tanner Houck went to high school.

He was picked in the 12th round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, but he declined to sign and instead played collegiate baseball for the University of Missouri.

Houck started 15 games as a freshman for Missouri in 2015, finishing 8–5 with a 3.49 ERA in 100+23 innings, 91 strikeouts, and only 12 walks.

Houck started 15 games as a sophomore, going 5–6 with a 2.99 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 15 appearances.

In the 2017 MLB draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Houck with the 24th overall choice.

He signed on June 21, 2017, and was assigned to the Lowell Spinners of the Class A Short Season League, where he spent the entire season, going 0–3 with a 3.63 ERA in 22+13 innings pitched.

In 23 starts with the Salem Red Sox at the Class A Advanced level, he was 7–11 with a 4.24 ERA.

He started the 2019 season with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs before being promoted to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox on July 13.

Houck went 8–6 with a 4.01 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 107+23 innings in 2019. Houck made six starts for the Arizona Fall League’s Peoria Javelinas following the regular season in 2019.
