Vangelis was a Greek musician and composer of electronic, progressive, ambient, jazz, and orchestral music. He earned the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1980 for his work on the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire.
On top of being the film’s theme, the soundtrack’s single made it to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was utilized as the background music at the London 2012 Olympic medal presentation ceremonies.
In addition, he wrote the song for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan, which served as the tournament’s anthem.
In the previous two decades, he has worked with NASA and ESA on several music projects, including Mythodea, Rosetta, and his final studio album, Juno to Jupiter.
Over the course of his 50-year career, Vangelis has created and performed on more than 50 albums, making him one of the most influential characters in electronic music history.
