Berrios, 27, was acquired in late July in a deal with the Minnesota Twins. He was slated to become a free agent following the 2022 season. Berrios had a 5-4 record with a 3.58 earned-run average in 12 starts for the Blue Jays.
Berrios was sad to leave Minnesota after five seasons, but the Blue Jays’ economic model convinced him otherwise.
Berrios’ eagerness to stay with the franchise, according to Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins, made re-signing him a priority as Toronto approaches a crucial off-season with numerous free players to deal with.
“I believe the most essential thing was our shared interest,” Atkins added. “Once we gauged it early on, we wanted to make sure we took full advantage of the opportunity and that attention was felt.”
The deal gives the Blue Jays some long-term stability in a rotation that might be drastically different next season.
Robbie Ray, who earned the Cy Young Award as the American League’s top pitcher in 2021 on Thursday, turned down the Blue Jays’ one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer last week.
Ray’s decision was predicted since he is likely to be one of the free agency’s most sought-after players.
