When was Luis Severino Drafted?
Luis Severino was drafted by the New York Yankees in December 2011 as a free foreign agent. He didn’t play for the Yankees until 2015 when he made his debut.
When a Yankees scout offered Severino a contract equal to that of the Colorado Rockies, Severino decided to join the team he had come to love as a kid.
He was able to hurl his fastball at 91 mph (146 kph) at the time. That year, he made his professional debut with the Yankees 1 of the Dominican Summer League (DSL).
With a 4–2 record, a 1.68 ERA, and 45 strikeouts in 64 innings, he pitched well enough to secure a spot in the rotation.
He began the season with the DSL Yankees 1 and was later promoted to the Class A South Atlantic League’s Charleston RiverDogs.
After 10 games, he had a record of 4–2 with a 2.45 ERA and 53 strikeouts (eight starts). At Charleston, he threw his fastball at 97 mph (156 kph).
Brian Cashman, the general manager of the Yankees, declared that Severino’s next start will be in the major leagues against the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees’ key opponent, at Yankee Stadium following the late-July injury to Michael Pineda.
There is no limit on how many innings pitchers can throw this season because they limited his innings earlier this season, according to New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.
Manager Joe Girardi of the Yankees has scheduled Severino’s big league debut for August 5. After five innings, Severino gave up two hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking none.
He was the MLB’s youngest starter in 2015, pitching the first inning for the New York Mets at the age of 21. Additionally, he made MLB history by becoming the first AL pitcher to have seven strikeouts, zero walks, and no more than two hits in a major league debut.
