Where did Whit Merrifield go to High School?
Whit Merrifield was a student at the Davie County High School in Mocksville, North Carolina
Whitley David Merrifield was born in Florence, South Carolina, but grew up in Mocksville, North Carolina, about an hour north of Charlotte, where he went to high school.
He was a member of the University of South Carolina baseball team, where he played all over the field and helped the Gamecocks win the College World Series in 2010.
That year, the Royals took him in the ninth round, just a few choices before the Mets selected pitcher Jacob deGrom.
Merrifield was assigned to low-A Burlington right away, which is a high level for a first-round pick. He only played in the outfield and hit .253/.317/.409.
He was already at High-A Wilmington the next season, a difficult environment for a hitter, and he was able to hold his own. With 24 thefts and a batting average of 263/.337/.369, he was caught 14 times.
For the Blue Rocks, he usually played second base, although he also saw action in the outfield.
In 2012, he had a similar season in Wilmington and was promoted to AA Northwest Arkansas in the latter month of the season.
Merrifield moved to Northwest Arkansas after failing to impress in the Arizona Fall League. He continued to have a low on-base percentage and slugging percentage but showed strong speed and positional versatility.
Merrifield, who was 25 at the time, hit his stride in 2014. Merrifield tore up the Pacific Coast League, hitting .340/.373/.474 in 76 games with Omaha after hitting .278/.366/.463 in 44 games with Northwest Arkansas.
