Downs was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on December 21, 2018, along with Homer Bailey and Josiah Gray, for Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood, Kyle Farmer, and financial considerations.

Downs has ordinary speed, but because of his high baseball IQ, he plays faster on the base paths and in the middle infield.

He has the hands and arm strength to play shortstop, but his range is better suited for second base.

Downs may fill the vacuum at second that has remained since Dustin Pedroia’s injury in 2017. The Red Sox already has Xander Bogaerts at short.
