Xander Jan Bogaerts is an Aruban professional baseball shortstop for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball and the Netherlands national baseball team. He is nicknamed “the X-Man” and “Bogey” or “Bogie”.
Bogaerts made his MLB debut in 2013, after being signed as an amateur free agent by the Red Sox in 2009.
He appeared in 30 games throughout the regular season and postseason, and helped the Red Sox win the World Series.
In 2014, he was named the Red Sox’s starting shortstop, and he won the American League’s Silver Slugger Award at the position in back-to-back years, 2015 and 2016, as well as 2019 and 2021.
Bogaerts was spotted by Mike Lord, a scout for the Boston Red Sox when he was 16 years old.
Bogaerts played for Lord after missing two weeks due to chickenpox, and Lord recommended him to Craig Shipley, the Red Sox’s vice president of international scouting.
Shipley traveled to Aruba to see Bogaerts in action. He signed a contract with the Red Sox that included a $410,000 signing bonus.
Bogaerts debuted professionally in the Dominican Summer League (DSL) in 2010 when he hit .314 with a .396 on-base percentage and a .423 slugging percentage.
