Salvador Ramos, 18, has been identified as the gunman who killed at least 19 children and two adults on Tuesday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

Governor Greg Abbott claimed Ramos carried out the mass killing “horribly and inexplicably” before being shot by police.

Why is Salvador Ramos popular?

According to Mr Abbott, Ramos was a student at Uvalde High School in the little city 80 miles west of San Antonio.

According to state Sen Roland Gutierrez, who was briefed by police, Ramos had intimated on social media that an attack could be coming. “He warned the kids to be careful,” the legislator stated.

Mr Abbott said at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon that he shot his grandmother before driving to Robb Elementary just before midday on Tuesday.

Sgt Erick Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety told CNN that she is in critical condition.

Ramos is suspected of leaving his car outside the school and entering with a handgun and maybe a rifle. The killer wore body armor, according to police.

“As soon as the suspect entered the school, he began killing students, teachers, and anyone else who stood in his way,” Christopher Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety told local media.

Ramos was shot and killed by officers who arrived at the site.

The 19 pupils and two adults killed are the most victims of an elementary school shooting since the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, which killed 20 students and six teachers.
