Juwan Antonio Howard is the current head coach of the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team and a former professional basketball player in the United States. From 2013 to 2019, he worked as an assistant coach with the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association. Howard was a member of the NBA from 1994 to 2013.

He began his NBA career as the fifth overall pick in the 1994 NBA draft, taken by the Washington Bullets. He was a one-time All-Star and one-time All-NBA power forward.

He was an All-American for the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team before being drafted.

He was a member of Michigan’s Fab Five recruiting class of 1991, which helped the Wolverines reach the NCAA Tournament championships in 1992 and 1993. With Miami, Howard won two NBA championships in 2012 and 2013.

Jannie Mae Howard, Howard’s grandmother, was the daughter of Mississippi sharecroppers. Howard’s mother Helena was one of her four daughters by the time she was 19.

When Helena became pregnant with Juwan, she was working as a waitress in a Chicago restaurant. Leroy Watson, Howard’s father, had recently returned from the army and was working for a phone company in Chicago.
