At the age of six, he made his acting debut on All of Us, a UPN program produced by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and based on their own blended family. Jaden made his big-screen debut not long after in the film The Pursuit of Happiness (2006).
Smith moved out on his own in 2008 to make his first appearances in projects that did not include his parents. In April of that year, he appeared as a guest star in an episode of the hit Disney Channel sitcom The Suite Life of Zach and Cody.

Following that, he co-starred with Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in a version of the classic science fiction thriller The Day the Earth Stood Still, for which he received a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor.
