Mervyn S. Melendez, known in baseball as MJ Melendez plays baseball for the Kansas City Royals baseball team of the Major League Baseball(MLB). He positions as their catcher when in a game.

MJ was born November 29, 1998, in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States of America. MJ’s non-professional career as a baseball player began at the St. James School in Montgomery, Alabama where he played for three years before transferring to Westminster Christian School in Palmetto Bay, Florida for his senior year.

In college, MJ played college baseball at Florida International University where he was selected by the Kansas City Royals during the second round of the 52nd overall 2017 MLB draft. He signed with the Royals for a $2.1 million signing bonus. MJ made his professional debut with the Rookie-level Arizona League Royals, an affiliate to the Royals after he signed with the team. For the 2018 baseball season, he was with the Lexington Legends of the Class A South Atlantic League.

He spent his 2019 season with the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League and was named an All-Star. In 2020, he did not play a minor league game due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Royals picked MJ’s contract in November 2021 and added him to their 40-man roster.
