The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip died on April 9, 2021, two months before his 100th birthday, at the age of 99. The cause of death was listed as “old age” on the death certificate signed by Sir Huw Thomas, the head of the Royal Medical Household.
The Duke had requested a smaller funeral, but changes were made to the plan to bring it in compliance with COVID-19 requirements, which included quarantine for family members travelling from abroad.
Prince Philip Funeral
The Duke of Edinburgh received a royal ceremonial funeral rather than a state funeral, as is customary for kings. His wishes were said to be for a military funeral at St George’s Chapel and burial alongside his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, in King George VI’s Memorial Chapel.
The event was seen by an estimated 13.6 million viewers in the United Kingdom and 13.8 million in the United States. The coffin was to be carried through Windsor Castle by the Grenadier Guards in a specially-designed Land Rover Defender hearse that the Duke helped design.
The procession route was lined by personnel from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, The Highlanders, 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, and the Royal Air Force.
Around 730 members of the Armed Forces attended the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel. A nationwide minute of silence was held at 3 p.m., with members of The Rifles forming a guard of honour. The Dean of Windsor and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby officiated during the funeral service.

Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, there were restrictions on the number of people who could attend the burial, which reduced the number of people who could attend to 30.
This restriction did not apply to those who were involved in the funeral, such as pallbearers and clergy. As a result, only members of the Royal Family and a limited number of relatives attended inside the chapter
