Severino is from Sabana de la Mar, in the Dominican Republic’s Hato Mayor region. He grew up rooting for the Yankees, particularly Robinson Canó, a Dominican teammate.

In 2015, Luis Severino made his Major League Baseball debut. The following year, he emerged as one of the finest pitchers in the league, being named an All-Star and placing third in the American League Cy Young Award voting.

In 2018, he was also selected as an All-Star. Shoulder issues kept him out of most of the 2019 season and all of the 2020 season.

On December 26, 2011, Severino agreed to a $225,000 signing bonus with the New York Yankees as an international free agent.

His contract with the Colorado Rockies had already been agreed to by him, but an offer from one of the Yankees’ Scouts swayed him to sign with them instead. He had a fastball that could go 91 mph (146 km/h) at the time.

For the Yankees of the Dominican Summer League (DSL) 1, he made his professional debut. With a 4–2 record, a 1.68 ERA, and 45 strikeouts in 64+13 innings, he made 14 starts for the team.

While playing with the DSL Yankees 1 in 2013, he was then promoted to the Class A South Atlantic League team, the Charleston RiverDogs.

In ten games, he went 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched (eight starts). At Charleston, he threw his fastball at 97 miles per hour (156 kilometers per hour).
