Emilio Mwai Kibaki was one of the ex-Presidents of Kenya. He ruled Kenyan citizens from December 2002 until April 2013 when he was succeeded by Uhuru Kenyatta. Before he became president, he served as Vice-President of Kenya for ten years.
He was born to Kibaki Gĩthĩnji and Teresia Wanjikũ on November 15, 1931, in Kenya. He was a student at Mathari School in 1944 and completed in 1946 after which he enrolled at Mang’u High School where he studied between 1947 and 1950.
During his O Level exams, he gained the highest grade and got admission to study economics, history and political science at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda where he graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in economics. After he graduated from the University, he stayed in Uganda for a while and worked at a Shell Company in East Africa.
Mwai earned a postgraduate scholarship to study at any European university he wanted. He chose the London School of Economics where he studied BSc in public finance and graduated with distinction. He went back to his Alma Mater, Makerere in 1958 to work as an Assistant Lecturer in the economics department until 1961.
In 1961, Mwai Kibaki got married to Lucy Muthoni, the daughter of a church minister. They were married from 1961 till Lucy died in April 2016.
