Rosmarie Trapp, the daughter of the couple who inspired The Sound of Music, has died. The Austrian singer’s family announced the tragic news on Instagram on Saturday.
The message included two images of her and stated that she ‘went away quietly on Friday evening at the age of 93; she was surrounded by loving ones all day long.’
The first of two photos featured the performer posing on a bike while wearing a blue jacket and a white helmet. The basket on the front handlebars of the two-wheeler was fastened, and she smiled as she grabbed onto them.
Rosmarie wore a long skirt, tube socks, and sneakers with her white hair spilling out of her protective helmet. ‘Her compassion, generosity, and vibrant character were legendary, and she made a wonderful influence on innumerable lives,’ the family statement read.
Her family members – Johannes, Lynne, Kristina, and Sam von Trapp – begged fans to respect our family’s privacy as we absorb this loss and prepare to honor the life of an incredible woman.’
‘We feel the greatest approach to commemorate Rosmarie is to display the same unselfish compassion and charity that she exemplified on a daily basis,’ the caption said.
Over 1,800 of the Trapp Family Lodge’s 21,000 followers liked the post. Rosmarie was the oldest child of Captain Georg and his second wife, Maria Augusta, and was born on February 8, 1929.
She was raised in a large family with seven elder half-siblings and two younger siblings. The combined family fled to the United States before World War II, which inspired the 1959 Broadway musical The Sound of Music. It was turned into a film in 1965 starring Julie Andrews, which won five Academy Awards in 1966.
