Who Is Faustin-Archange Touadéra?
President of the Central African Republic since March 2016, Faustin-Archange Touadéra is a Central African politician and professor.
From January 2008 to January 2013, he served as President of the Central African Republic.
He was elected president in a second round of voting against former Prime Minister Anicet Georges Dologuélé in the presidential election of December 2015–February 2016.
On December 27, 2020, he was re-elected to his second term.
Touadéra was born in Bangui, the son of a driver and a farmer from Damara, a town north of Bangui.
Before attending the University of Bangui and the University of Abidjan, he acquired his secondary education at the Barthelemy Boganda College in Bangui, where he earned a baccalaureate in 1976.
In 1986, he received a doctorate in mathematics from Lille University of Science and Technology (Lille I) in France, under the supervision of Daniel Gourdin, and in 2004, he received another doctorate in mathematics from the University of Yaoundé I in Cameroon, under the supervision of Marcel Dossa.
Faustin-Archange Touadéra Political Career
Following the departure of Élie Doté, President François Bozizé appointed Touadéra as Prime Minister on January 22, 2008.
On January 28, he named a cabinet of 29 people, including four ministers of state, 17 ministers, and seven minister delegates, as well as himself.
In the presidential election between December 2015 and February 2016, Touadéra ran as a candidate.
He secured the backing of the majority of defeated candidates for the second round, which he won with 62 percent of the vote after finishing second in the first round.
On March 30, 2016, he was sworn in. He promised to pursue disarmament and “make CAR a united country, a country of peace, a country facing progress” while speaking at the event.
On April 2, 2016, he appointed Simplice Sarandji as Prime Minister.
Sarandji served as Touadéra’s campaign manager during the election and as the Prime Minister’s chief of staff.
France stated after he was sworn in that its military intervention in the Central African Republic will come to an end.
As part of Operation Sangaris, roughly 2,500 French troops were stationed in the nation, assisting about 10,000 UN personnel.
Touadéra now has the immediate difficulty of maintaining security in key cities without France’s help.
