Which Teams Did Wes Welker Ever Play For?

Wes Welker in his 11 years playing career played for a number of 5 NFL. He first played for the San Diego Chargers (2004) before retiring with St. Louis Rams (2015).

Wes Welker Career History As A Player

San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers signed Welker as an undrafted free agent after he went undrafted in the 2004 NFL Draft. He made the team out of training camp, but he was cut after the first game of the season when the Chargers signed Clinton Hart from the waiver wire.

Head coach Marty Schottenheimer later remarked that the “worst mistake [he] ever made” in terms of roster cutbacks was the release of Welker.

Miami Dolphins

Welker was released by the Chargers and cleared waivers. After turning down an invite to the Chargers’ training camp and signing with the Dolphins, Welker spent the majority of his time playing on special teams. On October 10, 2004, Welker became the second player in NFL history to return a kickoff and a punt, kick an extra point and a field goal, and make a tackle in a single game against the New England Patriots.

Welker was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for this performance. A 71-yard punt return by Welker set up Miami’s first touchdown in a 29–28 win over the Patriots on Monday Night Football in December.

New England Patriots

Welker’s first ten games with the Patriots were better than his first ten games with the Dolphins in 2006; he had more receptions, touchdowns, and yards. He caught the first of the Patriots’ record 75 touchdowns in a 38–14 win over the New York Jets in Week 1, equaling the one receiving touchdown he had in his three seasons with the Dolphins.

Denver Broncos

Welker signed a two-year, $12 million deal with the Broncos on March 13, 2013. After failing to reach an agreement on a deal with the New England Patriots, Welker signed with the Broncos.

He collected nine receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos’ 49–27 win over the Baltimore Ravens on NBC Sunday Night Football in his first game with the team.

St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams signed Welker to a one-year deal worth $1.8 million, plus incentives, on November 9, 2015.  In 2015, he played in eight games with the Rams, but he didn’t start any of them, and he had 13 receptions for 102 yards.  Welker played his final season in the NFL in 2015.
