He obtained a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, and as a co-captain, he helped head coach Lou Holtz lead the Fighting Irish to a national championship in 1988.
Heck transitioned to coaching after two years as a graduate assistant at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
In 2004, Heck became the assistant offensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was elevated to offensive line coach in 2006, and he has been with the team since that time.
Heck became the offensive line coach for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. When the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV in 2019, he won his first Super Bowl.
