Between November 2021 and June 2022, Australian professional boxer George Kambosos Jr (born 14 June 1993) held the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight belts.
Kambosos was born to Greek-American parents in Sydney, New South Wales.
Kambosos’ paternal grandparents immigrated to Australia from Sparta, and he has the legendary Spartan war cry “Never retreat, never surrender” tattooed on his torso as a tribute to his ancestors.
He started playing junior rugby league for the Gymea Gorillas at an early age and was ridiculed as a child for being overweight, so his father enrolled him in boxing courses at the age of 11 to help him get in shape.
Kambosos rapidly lost the weight and was drafted into the Cronulla Sharks development squad, where he was coached by Ricky Stuart. However, as a teenager, he was forced to choose between boxing and rugby league.
He chose to pursue a career in boxing and began his career by winning 85 of his first 100 amateur contests before going professional. Throughout his childhood, Kambosos attended Bexley Public School in Sydney’s southern suburbs.
