Volkov joined M-1 Global in 2008. In April 2009, he made his professional MMA debut, defeating Nikolay Pleshakov by TKO (punches) in just 80 seconds.

Volkov backed it up a month later with another TKO victory, this bout in only 20 seconds against Adam Alikhanov.

Volkov’s first professional loss came a month later when he was defeated by Akhmed Sultanov. Volkov was forced to submit to an armbar midway through the first round.

After that, Volkov embarked on a two-fight winning streak, both by TKO.

Volkov faced Ibragim Magomedov at M-1 Challenge 20 – 2009 Finals in December 2009, after only eight months as a professional fighter.

Volkov’s team only expected him to make it through the first three rounds as an underdog, but he outperformed expectations by winning by unanimous decision.

“As a reward for extraordinary accomplishment,” Volkov received an M-1 Global ring.

Volkov fought Denis Smoldarev for the vacant M-1 Global Heavyweight championship on February 19, 2016, at M-1 Challenge 64, and won by submission (triangle choke).

On June 16, 2016, at M-1 Challenge 68, Volkov took on former Bellator light heavyweight champion Attila Végh.

In the first round, he was knocked out. This battle, as well as others in the M-1 league, may be seen on the M-1 Global TV channel’s All fights of Alexander Volkov on the M-1 Global page.
