Bryan Eduardo Mata, a Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, was born on May 3, 1999, in Maracay, Venezuela. He bats and throws with his right hand.
Mata signed as an international free agent with the Boston Red Sox in January 2016, receiving a $25,000 signing bonus.
That summer, he made his professional debut for the DSL Red Sox, where he stayed the entire season, posting a 4–4 record, a 2.80 ERA, and a 1.20 WHIP in 14 starts.
He pitched for the Greenville Drive of the Class A South Atlantic League in 2017, going 5–6 with a 3.74 ERA in 17 starts.
Mata was rated the fourth best prospect in Boston by MLB.com heading into the 2018 season.
Mata, who pitches for the Class A-Advanced Salem Red Sox, was the only Boston prospect picked for the 2018 All-Star Futures Game, where he worked one inning of scoreless relief, walking one batter and striking out one.
Mata went 6–3 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 17 appearances for Salem.
Mata began the 2019 season with the Salem Witches before being promoted to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs on July 1.
Mata went 7–7 with both teams this season, with a 3.43 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 105 innings.
Mata was asked to participate in the Red Sox’ autumn instructional league after the minor league season in 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
