Between November 2021 and June 2022, George Kambosos Jr (born 14 June 1993) was the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and The Ring lightweight champion.

Kambosos was born to parents of Greek origin in Sydney, New South Wales.

Kambosos has the legendary Spartan war cry “Never retreat, never surrender” tattooed on his torso as a tribute to his ancestors, who moved from Sparta to Australia.

He started playing junior rugby league for the Gymea Gorillas at an early age, and because he was ridiculed as a child for being overweight, his father enrolled him in boxing courses at the age of 11 to help him improve his fitness.

Kambosos lost weight swiftly and was drafted into the Cronulla Sharks development squad, where he was coached by Ricky Stuart. As a youngster, he was forced to pick between boxing and rugby league.

Before turning professional, he chose the boxing route and won 85 of his first 100 amateur contests. Throughout his childhood, Kambosos was a student at Bexley Public School in Sydney’s southern suburbs.
