The La Repubblica daily has announced the death of its long-time employee tennis journalist and writer Giani Clerici. Clerici died today June 6, 2022, at the age of 91 as he was born on 24 July 1930.

Clerici and his sidekick Rino Tommasi were known for their off-the-wall banter. One of the highlights of his tennis career was making the main draw at Wimbledon in 1953.

Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006, Clerici was the author of several tennis publications. In 1947 and 1948, Gianni Clerici won the Italian doubles championship with Fausto Gardini. He won the “Coppa de Galea” and the Monte Carlo New Year’s Eve Tournament before switching from the grass of Wimbledon to the red clay of Roland Garros for at least one round.

Clerici hung up his racket and went to work for the Gazzetta Dello Sport and he quickly rose to fame and became known as “the tennis man” after joining Giorno in 1956.
