Michael Timothy Shildt is an American ex-baseball manager. While working as a scout and manager for the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system, he was named manager of the team in 2018 after Mike Matheny was fired.
He led the 2019 Cardinals to the NLCS and was voted Manager of the Year. Both the 2020 and 2021 seasons concluded with NL Wild Card defeats. On October 14, 2021, Shildt was fired.
Shildt was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and attended Olympic High School and the University of North Carolina (UNC) Asheville Bulldogs for high school and collegiate baseball, respectively.
Coach Shildt helped West Charlotte High School’s baseball team to its first winning season in two decades after his playing days were cut short because he “couldn’t hit a curveball.”
When Shildt finished high school, he worked as an assistant coach for the Charlotte 49ers baseball club at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
For five years, he held the role. His baseball training facility in North Carolina during the off-season made him a full-time baseball coach for local youngsters.
