Johnny Hekker’s Super Bowl Records
With a 65-yard punt in Super Bowl LIII, he owns the record for the NFL’s longest punt in Super Bowl history.
Super Bowl LIII was an American football game held on February 3, 2018, to determine the 2018 National Football League champion. The New England Patriots (AFC) defeated the Los Angeles Rams (NFC) 13–3. The event, which took place on February 3, 2019, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, was the stadium’s inaugural Super Bowl.
This will be the Rams’ fourth Super Bowl appearance and their first since the relocation from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016. They ended their regular season with a 13–3 record under head coach Sean McVay, who is the youngest Super Bowl coach at 33.
In the Rams’ 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LIII, punter Johnny Hekker set many records as one of the team’s most successful weapons.
It was Hekker’s eighth punt of the night that set a Super Bowl record of 65 yards on the Rams’ eighth possession. Both the Rams and Hekker have punted on their opening eight possessions. Hekker’s 65-yard punt broke the record set by the Patriots’ Ryan Allen.
Nearly halfway through the third quarter, the game-tying punt was executed. The Rams had just three first downs at the time. This team had only racked up 82 yards, or 10.25 yards per drive, throughout their previous outings.
Just 2.7 yards per play had been the average for them. Even though the Patriots had racked up 236 yards of total offense, their lead remained at 3-0.
