Melvin Ingram III plays linebacker and defensive end for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. He received All-American accolades while playing collegiate football at the University of South Carolina.
Ingram grew up in Hamlet, North Carolina. In Rockingham, North Carolina, he attended Richmond Senior High School. He collected 87 tackles and 2.5 sacks as a senior linebacker.
For his undergraduate studies, Ingram went to the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of coach Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks football team from 2007 to 2011.
He began his college career as a linebacker for the South Carolina Gamecocks before transferring to the defensive end position. In 2010, as a junior, he was the team leader in sacks with nine.
To go along with his two interceptions, Ingram amassed 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss in 2011. He also tallied three rushing touchdowns. In a 45–42 win over Georgia, he scored two touchdowns, including a 68-yard fake punt for a touchdown.
His outstanding senior season helped the Gamecock defense reach a final national ranking of number four, and he was named to the first team of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and was a unanimous All-American.
