The manager of the Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball, José Carlos Montoyo Daz, is a Puerto Rican who was himself a professional baseball second baseman (MLB).
When the Rays’ Triple-A club, the Durham Bulls, was looking for a manager in 2015, Montoyo was a possibility. He was appointed as the Rays’ third base coach after eight seasons as manager of the Durham Bulls (2007-2014). Afterward, he was named bench coach for the Rays in 2017. The Toronto Blue Jays hired Montoyo as their new manager on October 25, 2018, replacing John Gibbons.
Montoyo was one of three AL Manager of the Year candidates after the 2020 season, along with Tampa Bay Rays’ Kevin Cash and Chicago White Sox’ Rick Renteria.
To keep Montoyo under contract through the 2022 season, the Jays chose to activate their fourth-year option on his contract on March 16, 2021.
