Sam Madison, a Miami Dolphins cornerback who played for the team that chose him in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft, opted to retire after a 12-year career.
It was through a text message from Madison to Miami Herald writer Adam Beasley that the news of his retirement broke.
Madison’s NFL career comes to an end after nine seasons with the Miami Dolphins and three seasons with the New York Giants.
He appeared in 173 games and recorded 471 tackles, 38 interceptions (two of which were returned for touchdowns), 81 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries (one of which was returned for a touchdown), and two sacks.
He was selected to the Pro Bowl four times and was named to the First Team of the NFL’s All-Decade Team twice.
It was a sad finish to his brief return to the Dolphins, but Madison will deservedly retire with the team that brought him into the league, for whom he played his greatest days, and in front of the people who have come to know and love him as a football player.
