James Casey Career History As A Coach
Casey served as an offensive football analyst for Houston in 2016, his first year as a coach following his playing career, and led the Cougars to a No. 15 national rating in passing offense (310.9 yards per game).
Houston was also 21st in scoring offense (38.0 points per game) and saw 11 of its 12 regular-season games go above 30 points.
Casey was instrumental in the development of Houston tight end Romello Brooker, who finished the season with 29 receptions for 364 yards and six touchdowns (led the American Athletic Conference). Brooker had had nine career catches coming into 2017.
Houston’s tight ends helped the team rank 14th in the country in passing offense (300.9 yards per game) and 20th in running the offense under Casey’s guidance (227.7).
In 2018, Houston was one of only two schools in the country (the other being Oklahoma) to rank in the top 20 in both passing and rushing offenses.
Casey spent three years on the coaching staff at the University of Houston (2016-18) before joining the Bengals.
He was the special teams coordinator/tight ends coach for the Cougars in 2018, and he helped them finish fourth in scoring (46.4 points per game) and sixth in overall offense (528.6 yards per game).
Houston scored at least 30 points in each of their 12 regular-season games, with 10 of them surpassing the 40-point barrier.
