5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive Players Of All-Time
Lee Roy Selmon
Lee Roy Selmon, the Bucs’ first-round draft pick in 1976, won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 1979 after leading the team from a 0-26 start to the NFC Central title and a berth in the NFC Championship game. Selmon was inducted into the Buccaneers’ Hall of Fame in 1995 and is a member of the Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor. Freeways aren’t named after mediocre athletes.
Logan, Dave
Logan was a crucial component of the Bucs’ successful defenses in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and he is still the team’s fifth-leading sacker with 39 quarterback takedowns. The nose tackle was a two-time second-team All-Pro and a member of three Buccaneers playoff teams.
Warren Sapp
Sapp was everything a football player should be. No one pushed more in practice or put in more effort on Sundays than Sapp, who was nastier, edgier, tenacious, and persistent. His 77 career sacks behind only Lee Roy Selmon (78.5) in team history. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro. The former Hurricanes star was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1999, is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, and has been inducted into the Buccaneers Ring of Honor.
Rice, Simeon
Rice concluded his Buccaneers career with 69.5 sacks, second only to Selmon and Sapp in franchise history. Rice set a Bucs record with a five-year streak of double-digit sacks.
David Lavonte
David’s ability to succeed in the NFL was questioned by many owing to his diminutive stature, which caused him to fall to the second round. David would not have made it out of the Top 10 if the 2012 NFL Draft were re-done today. David has 1,125 career tackles, which puts him third on the team after Ronde Barber (1,428) and Derrick Brooks (2,198).
