After retiring from the NFL, he relocated to South Jersey and worked as a vice president of sales for a Philadelphia travel agency. Later in life, he ran a number of businesses, including the fabrication of steels of various kinds and sports marketing.

Carmichael was drafted in the seventh round (161st overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was converted to a tight end as a rookie, starting six of the nine games and leading the team’s tight ends with 20 receptions becoming fourth on the team.

He was transferred to wide receiver the following season. With the advent of head coach Mike McCormack, he had a breakout year in 1973, leading the league with 67 receptions for 1,116 yards (16.7 average) and tied for fourth with  receiving touchdowns of nine
