The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the Bronx neighborhood of New York City. The Yankees are a member of the American League (AL) East division in Major League Baseball (MLB).

They are one of two major league teams based in New York City, the other being the New York Mets of the National League (NL). The Baltimore Orioles were the Yankees’ first opponents in 1901. (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles).

After the franchise suspended operations in 1903, Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased it and relocated it to New York City, dubbing the team the New York Highlanders. In 1913, the Highlanders have renamed the New York Yankees.

New York Yankees Announcer?

John Sterling conceived John Sloss on July 4, 1938, is an American sportscaster best known for his work as the radio play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Beginning in 1989, Sterling called 5,060 successive Yankees games before taking an eight-day, four-game vacation in July 2019.

Sterling returned to New York in 1989 to work for WABC radio, where he called Yankees games. Since then, he’s been with the Yankees, calling games for WFAN and the New York Yankees Radio Network’s affiliates.

Sterling’s connection to the Yankees extends beyond broadcasting live games on the radio. He’s also the host of the Yankeeography series on the YES Network, which features histories of New York Yankees.
