Kenneth Allan Anderson is a former American football quarterback who spent his whole career with the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL) before returning as a position coach. He was born on February 15, 1949.
Anderson was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 1971 NFL Draft after playing collegiate football for Augustana College. Anderson topped the league in passer rating four times, completion % three times, and throwing yards twice during his 16-year NFL career.
He won the AP NFL Most Valuable Player and AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year awards in 1981, the season he led the Bengals to their first Super Bowl participation. Anderson set an NFL completion percentage record of 70.6 percent in 1982, which he maintained for over 30 years until Drew Brees broke it in 2009.
Anderson holds numerous of the Cincinnati Bengals’ franchise throwing marks, including completions, attempts, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions, as of the end of the 2018 NFL season.
Anderson worked as a radio broadcaster for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1987 to 1993 after retiring from professional football. He was the Bengals’ quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 1993 through 2002. Anderson went on to teach quarterbacks for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2006 and the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2007 to 2009 before retiring from football in 2010.
Anderson has twice been a Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist and is widely considered one of the best players not in the Hall of Fame.
